July Happenings

July should be a busy month at the library. There is something planned for every day that we are open Monday through Thursday. On Mondays at 5 pm we will have the drawing to see who is the winner of the weekly Thayer Trivia Contest. At 6:30 on the 9th, the 23rd, and the 30th we will have Family Time for families with preschoolers. This is a time for a quick story and simple craft. On Monday July 16th there will be a Meet and Greet for members of the community to come and visit with me and have some refreshments. Every Tuesday at 2 the Thayer Trivia Weekly question will be availbale. Come in and pick up a question, see if you can find the answer, and then return the form to the library anytime during the week. A winner will be drawn from all correct entries. Wednesdays will see the start of Story Time for children. All children are welcome to come listen to stories at 3 PM. The events on Thursdays are reserved for our Summer Reading Program participants. This first Thursday, the 5th, will be borad games. The next Thursday is a movie and popcorn. I’ll pick the movie; you pick how many bags of popcorn you can eat. On the 19th, I will be showing how to make healthy snacks at home at the Make and Take Snacks. The final event for Thursday, July 26th will be a Wii system with several games to try out.

We also have a couple of month long contests running. The first is our search for a slogan for our library. We need a short, clever way to advertise our library. We are making every effort to make the library a community asset where everyone can find something useful. We need a slogan to highlight that. We have quite a few entries already, but we can always use more. The entries will be read and voted on by the Library Board members at the August meeting. The second contest is to see which of five authors is Thayer’s favorite. The five authors competing this month are all crime/mystery writers. They are Lawrence Block, Michael Connelly, Jeffery Deaver, James Patterson, and John Sandford. Copies of books by each author are available at the library. Check them out and vote for your favorite!

Hopefully, Thayer Friday Reading Club City Library has something for everyone. Don’t forget we always have free wi-fi, computers to use, printer, copier, fax, and air-conditioning! See you at the library!

New Library Director

Hi, my name is Suprena Cheshier, and I am the new library director which is a fancy title for me getting to tell me what to do! I am very excited about this new chapter in my career. For the last 26 years, I have been teaching English and Spanish to seventh and eighth-graders at Royster Middle School in Chanute, Kansas. I taught thousands of great kids over the years, but it was time for a change.
My mission at the library is to provide as many services as we can to all the citizens of Thayer. Everyone is welcome here! We have computers with internet access and a printer, free wi-fi, a copy machine, fax, magazines, VHS tapes, DVD’s, and books!
We want to provide programs for all ages. It is summer, so we have started the summer reading program for kids. We are offering three levels; families with preschoolers, grade school, and middle/high-school. Several activities will be held for each level. Readers also earn prizes for books read or for time spent reading. Adult readers will be challenged to participate in monthly contests. the first contest is to come up with a catchy slogan for the library. Also in the works is a preschool storytime. I would also like to organize a gardener’s seed exchange.
Everyone who has been in to the library has been so friendly. I want to thank all those people who have told during these last two weeks, “Glad to have you here.” I am glad to be here.
